Manchester Flooring Solutions was asked to provide flooring solutions in support of Casuarina Prison extension. This extension included the construction of a high security unit, two mainstream accommodation units, and updates to support and industry buildings.

Our team supplied the labour to install rubber tiles in common areas as part of extension works. The flooring had to be mechanically fitted so it couldn’t be easily torn up by the inmates and had to support high traffic, wear and tear.

Working within a prison environment proved complex and challenging, particularly the strict procedures relating to the daily entry and exit of the facility, and equipment usage.

Every tool and piece of equipment needed to be manually itemised, checked in and check out by the prison guards every day. No batteries or mobile phones could be brought into the facility, and no vehicles were allowed on site. This meant everything had to be brought in every day and needed to be locked away and retrieved by a guard each time we needed access to specific equipment.

These security procedures added extra layers of complexity and meant the job required extended timeframes for completion. We were happy to accommodate our client’s unique needs, however, and worked hard to be flexible, accommodating, understanding and available when we were needed.

As a result, and despite these obstacles to traditional ways of working, Manchester Flooring Solutions still completed the extension works on time and on budget – the client was very happy with the outcome.
